May 2007
The Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation
is pleased to announce that Sackville based printmaker Dan Steeves is
the winner of the 2007 Strathbutler Award. The award, now in its 17th
year, honours excellence in visual art or fine craft by a person who has
contributed significantly to the artistic community in the province of
New Brunswick.
Dan Steeves' work has been
exhibited in galleries in Canada, the United States, Holland, Italy,
Japan, Poland, Taiwan and the Ukraine. His prints are represented
internationally in both public and private collections.
Erik Edson, Assistant Editor of
Printmaking at Mount Allison University says, "It is without question
that Dan has made a significant contribution to the visual arts in New
Brunswick and to the broader cultural dialogue within this region."
The jury of this year's
Strathbutler Award said;
"Finding poetic resonance in stark black and white images of local
landscapes, Dan Steeves work suggests the passing of time and the
fragility of enduring values. Steeped in the traditions of printmaking,
his innovative work challenges our notions of stability and permanence."
Dan is represented by Abbozzo Gallery and his work was part of our 2005
exhibition 'A
Sense of Place' with David Blackwood and Thaddeus Holownia. |
